Description of the Program:

The Certificate in Asian Studies provides students with a foundation of knowledge about Asia that will be useful for their lives and future careers. It is a comparative and interdisciplinary program that draws curriculum from a wide range of disciplines, including but not limited to anthropology, international studies, geography, languages, linguistics, comparative literature, history, media studies, women and gender studies, postcolonial studies, sociology, and religion. It is designed for students whose career trajectories and life paths require broad knowledge about the diversity of cultures and societies that comprise Asia. It is also intended for students seeking a credential different from -- and supplemental to -- a major or minor in an Asian language.

Program Requirements:

15 hours of course work from 3 different departments or disciplines (see below). Up to 6 hours may be fulfilled by Asian language courses at the advanced level or above (for example CHNS 3010, JPNS 3010, KREN 3001, VIET 3001, or HINDI 2001). Up to 9 hours may be fulfilled by a non-UGA study away program with the approval of the Director. Courses that count towards a major or minor may also count towards the Certificate.

Course Offerings:

Course offerings change each semester due to instructor availability. The courses listed below are a sampling of the breadth and depth of course offerings related to Asian Studies. Courses not listed below may count for the Certficate with the approval of the Director.
