Dr. Yi received the Magnolia Order from the government of Republic of Korea for distinguished services in education. The Magnolia Medal is the 4th highest in South Korea's Order of Civil Merit. Her receiving this honor is not a small fit; it is a mark of significance, one that we are so proud of and want to underscore as part of our great story and accomplishment. We join the Republic of Korea in honoring her with this prestigious award as a reflection of great commitment and sustained effort with undeniable impact.

The African Languages, Literatures and Culture program in collaboration with the African Studies Institute, is dedicating its Cultural Awareness Celebration in Dr Yi’s honor. In African societies, elders occupy an esteemed position, serving as custodians of wisdom, experience, and tradition. Their priceless knowledge is passed down through generations, inspiring communities and preserving cultural legacy. Dr. Yi exemplifies such qualities and shows a devotion to honoring cultural diversity and the human connection, such that she visited Tanzania to learn about the people, language, and African culture. Even more importantly, she climbed Mt Kilimanjaro, all the way to its summit! She is the only female faculty member at UGA that has succeeded in doing that so far!
